If you have ever been to one of my Spinning classes then you know that yelling "Hard Work/Dedication" is one of my motivational tools. I love the feeling it gives, not only to me, but to the ones I work out along side of to feel that power. Spinning can be a difficult workout. It is a small room filled with a lot of bikes and a lot of people pedaling, jumping, doing push ups, sprinting and just plain kicking tail. Spinning is a beast mode workout for sure and I LOVE it!! I never thought it would be something I would get into because frankly, the first couple of times I did it, my backside hurt so bad I could barely sit down. However, people kept saying, just keep coming back. Do it 3 times and you will be hooked. It was true. The third time, I was hooked. It is a party on a bike for me.
This time of year, everyone is on the health band wagon. Everyone has the goal to look good for the summer. We set our minds and go after it. Then, life begins to get back in the way and excuses start to mount. It isn't like the excuses aren't good excuses, because most of the time they are. Kids have to be here or there, spouse needs you to do this after work, parents need looking after, yard work, yard sales, it's cold, it's hot, this hurts, that hurts and so so so many more things that could need our attention. I think what people fail to realize, and most of the time this is a built in brain thing we just have to retrain, is that if we aren't giving our bodies the proper attention, we aren't the best us we can be. So many of us have grown up and our lives have revolved around food. So many of us were trained to eat .... we eat to celebrate, we eat for comfort, we eat and eat and eat. However, when we become adults, it is our responsibility to retrain. We must understand that in order to live and live well, we have to make our health and our bodies our priority. It isn't always easy. I don't always want to go to my classes. Somedays I would be just as content to sit at home and clean house, catch up on my laundry and leave the gym for another day or week. But, I WANT to live. I WANT to live well. I WANT to do things with my daughter, like running and dancing and playing and not be out of breath. I want to grow older and wiser but still be able to run, spin, do Zumba or anything else I might want to do. I want to live without disease if at all possible. It is my responsibility to take care of my body and my health so that I can LIVE and THRIVE and to be an example to my daughter.
I can be the queen of excuse making. But that is what got me to the heaviest and most unhealthy I had ever been in my life. I NEVER want to be there again. I still pay for the consequences of previous behavior and I take responsibility for that. I can be the best me for me, my spouse and my daughter and for friends, family and my world around me. So, before your motivation runs out or begins to wane, I want to encourage you to take some time and ask yourself...why? Why do you want to do this...why do you want to be healthy?? What is your motivation? Because your motivation...your "why" is what will keep you going and keep you living the life of Hard Work and Dedication.
